The Qmunity District establishes a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming place for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and families in the South Bay where #WeAreCommunity. The new district will feature shopping, socializing, dining, networking, and nightlife in Downtown San José on Post Street from S. 1st to S. Market Streets. Despite being commonly overlooked, San José has a sizeable gay scene which made me want to experience more than just one night in the city. A beautiful country known for exotic wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, Costa Rica attracts straight and gay travelers for many of the same reasons. Along the way, I got a chance to meet some gay locals as well as a few ex-pats who are working or have started businesses in Costa Rica.
Used to be 16 gay bars/restaurants in the valley and now there’s barely 3. Queer people are here, but the places where you’d normally see queer culture have slowly dropped off. In addition, San Jose has a strong and vibrant LGBTQ community that is continually growing and welcoming to all. Truly, it would make a great city to call home. Prior to the time that European explorers arrived in the area, it was inhabited by Costanoan Indians.
